Update: 5.0 magnitude earthquake rattles near South Sandwich Islands region on July 2

A 5.0 magnitude quake hit near South Sandwich Islands region on Thursday around midnight, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor shook the area at 02:17 UTC (00:17 local time). It occurred at a depth of 104 km with the epicenter of South Sandwich Islands region. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.
