System name: Alvin

As per the National Hurricane Center’s 10 am Friday update, Tropical Storm Alvin is currently at the Pacific Ocean, 385 miles south of the Southern Tip of Baja California. With maximum sustained winds of 50 mph, it is moving northwest at 10 mph.

“Weakening is forecast, and Alvin is expected to degenerate to a remnant low on Saturday” analysts explained.

Yesterday (Thursday)

The system strengthened enough to get a name: Tropical Storm Alvin. It found new strength and had evolved from a tropical depression into a tropical storm with sustained winds of 40 mph. The system’s new name was first made public in yesterday’s 10 a.m. advisory.

Hazards affecting land

Surf. Swells generated by Alvin will affect portions of the coasts of west-central and southwestern Mexico and the southern Baja California Peninsula through the weekend. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
