System name: Fay

The National Hurricane Center’s 4 p.m. Sunday update reported that the system, which was named Fay, became a tropical storm with sustained winds of 45 mph after intensifying from a tropical depression. The name gain was first included in the 4 a.m. update. Tropical Storm Fay is in the Atlantic Ocean, 405 miles southwest of the Azores. With maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, it is moving to the north-northeast at 6 mph.

“Afterwards a turn to the southwest is expected on Monday,” forecasters explained. “Additional strengthening is forecast tonight, and Fay could approach hurricane intensity.” They also said “A gradual weakening trend is expected to begin on Monday.”
