On Monday around midday, a 5.2 magnitude quake was detected close to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

At 00:06 UTC (12:06 local time), the region was jolted by a tremor. The earthquake struck at a depth of 35 km, with its epicenter approximately 101 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.3 event, but later downgraded it to 5.2.

Tremors last week

Over the last week, the area has experienced 12 earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or above, three of them larger than magnitude 7. The most significant was a 7.7 magnitude earthquake recorded in the same region two days earlier.
