Seismic activity on July 12: Earthquake near Laytonville, CA detected – magnitude 2.0

MENDOCINO COUNTY, CA — According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a preliminary 2.0 magnitude quake occurred near Laytonville Saturday afternoon.

At 6:46 p.m., the region was struck by a tremor. The earthquake shook at a depth of just 0.3 miles, with its epicenter roughly 11 miles north-northwest of Laytonville.

Past week’s tremors

Two quakes, greater than magnitude 2.5, have been reported nearby during the last week. The more significant, a 3.0 magnitude quake, was registered close to Petrolia five days earlier. The other, a 2.9 magnitude earthquake, rattled near Lake Pillsbury on July 6.
