Update: Earthquake measuring 5.0 jolts area close to Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on July 30

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.0 magnitude quake occurred close to Severo-Kuril’sk Wednesday morning.

The tremor hit the region at 23:27 UTC (10:27 local time). It occurred at a depth of 10 km with the epicenter located roughly 171 km east-southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk. The magnitude was originally reported as 5.1 but later downgraded to 5.0.

Over the last week, there have been six tremors of magnitude 5.5 or greater centered nearby. The strongest, a 5.9 magnitude quake, was registered in the same region prior to this quake.
