Update: Earthquake of 5.0 magnitude reported near Vilyuchinsk, Russia on July 30

A 5.0 magnitude quake was detected near Vilyuchinsk Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor jolted the area at 04:48 UTC (15:48 local time). It occurred at a depth of 35 km with the epicenter situated approximately 153 km south-southeast of Vilyuchinsk. The magnitude was originally reported as 5.1 but later downgraded to 5.0.

Tremors last week

Seven tremors of magnitude 5.5 or higher have been registered in the region over the last week. The largest, measuring 6.2, slammed the same region prior to this quake.
