The tremor struck the area at 07:57 UTC (18:57 local time). It occurred at a depth of 13 km with the epicenter located roughly 167 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.5 event, but later downgraded it to 5.3.
