An updated fire weather watch was issued by the National Weather Service on Saturday at 10:31 p.m. valid for Sunday between 11 a.m. and noon for Kit Carson and Cheyenne counties.
The NWS states that the warning was issued for wind and low relative humidity. Residents can expect winds to be southwest at 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph and relative humidity as low as 10 to 15%.
“Warm temperatures, low humidity and breezy southwest winds will lead to critical fire weather conditions over portions of the area Sunday afternoon, mainly south of I-70 and west of Highway 83 where a Red Flag Warning is in effect. A Fire Weather Watch remains in effect Monday for Greeley and Wichita counties in Kansas,” states the NWS. “Unpredictable fire behavior. Any fires that develop may rapidly grow and spread out of control.”
According to the NWS, a fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are possible. Listen for later forecasts and possible red flag warnings.
