Update: Fire weather watch affecting the Eastern Plains Monday – high fire danger

Published Oct 19, 2025

An updated fire weather watch was issued by the National Weather Service on Sunday at 3:58 a.m. valid for Monday between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. for Yuma, Kit Carson and Cheyenne counties.

Residents can expect winds to be northwest at 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 50 mph and relative humidity as low as 15 percent.

“Strong northwest winds will develop in the wake of a cold frontal passage Monday morning. Strong winds will persist through the afternoon, when relative humidity readings are forecast to fall into the mid-teens,” says the NWS. “Unpredictable fire behavior. Any fires that develop may rapidly grow and spread out of control.”

According to the NWS, a fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are possible. Listen for later forecasts and possible red flag warnings.
