Update: Earthquake of 5.3 magnitude detected near Kirakira, Solomon Islands on Oct. 19

HAUNUNU, Makira-Ulawa Province — Sunday morning, a 5.3 magnitude quake was registered near Kirakira, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor jolted the area at 17:14 UTC (04:14 local time). It occurred at a depth of 92 km with the epicenter situated about 42 km west of Kirakira.

Last week’s quake

In the past week, another magnitude 5.0 tremor was recorded in the region, also occurring close to Kirakira six days ago.
