Update: Seismic activity on Sept. 25 – 5.3 magnitude earthquake close to Camiña, Chile reported

TAMARUGAL, Tarapacá — According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.3 magnitude quake struck close to Camiña Thursday afternoon.

It was reported that a tremor shook the region at 18:11 UTC (15:11 local time). The epicenter was situated approximately 27 km south-southeast of Camiña, at a depth of 109 km.

Weak to light shaking has been registered and residents reported feeling the tremor in a couple of cities, including Arica and Iquique, according to the USGS DYFI report.

Quakes last week

During the past week, the area has experienced three earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or above. The most significant was a 5.5 magnitude earthquake that jolted near La Tirana six days ago.

• 4.5, south of Camiña on Sept. 22
• 4.1, east of Camiña on Sept. 20
