The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.0 magnitude quake occurred close to Vilyuchinsk Thursday morning.

The tremor, which jolted the area at 18:02 UTC (05:02 local time), was centered roughly 168 km south-southeast of Vilyuchinsk. It occurred at a depth of 10 km.

Over the last week, there have been 21 tremors with a magnitude 2.5 or higher centered nearby, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The most significant was a 5.6 magnitude earthquake recorded in the same region three days earlier.
