Update: Earthquake measuring 5.3 hits area close to Vilyuchinsk, Russia on Sept. 22

A 5.3 magnitude quake was recorded close to Vilyuchinsk Monday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It was reported that a tremor shook the region at 18:46 UTC (05:46 local time). The epicenter was situated about 180 km south-southeast of Vilyuchinsk, at a depth of 22 km.

Over the last week, there have been 16 earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater centered nearby, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The largest one was a 5.6 earthquake that struck the same region prior to this quake.
