A 5.1 magnitude quake was detected near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Sunday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The tremor, which hit the region at 03:20 UTC (14:20 local time), was centered roughly 142 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. It occurred at a depth of 38 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.2 event, but later downgraded it to 5.1.

Last week, there have been nine tremors with a magnitude 5.5 or higher centered nearby. The largest one was a 7.8 earthquake that was recorded in the same region three days earlier.
