Update: Earthquake shakes region close to Kokopo, Papua New Guinea on July 27 – 5.0 magnitude detected

POMIO DISTRICT, East New Britain Province — A 5.0 magnitude quake occurred close to Kokopo on Monday around midnight, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A tremor struck the area at 14:33 UTC (00:33 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was approximately 145 km southwest of Kokopo and occurred at a depth of 92 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.1 event, but later downgraded it to 5.0.
