Earthquake of magnitude 5.0 detected close to Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on Aug. 18

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.0 magnitude quake occurred close to Severo-Kuril’sk on Monday around midday.

The tremor, which hit the area at 02:09 UTC (12:09 local time), was centered about 93 km south-southwest of Severo-Kuril’sk. It occurred at a depth of 64 km.

Tremors last week

Five tremors with a magnitude 2.5 or greater have been recorded in the region in the past week. The most significant was a 5.0 magnitude earthquake registered in the same region four days earlier.
