Update: Sept. 19 – 5.1 magnitude earthquake reported near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia

A 5.1 magnitude quake was detected near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on Friday around midday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor jolted the area at 01:12 UTC (12:12 local time). It occurred at a depth of 35 km with the epicenter situated roughly 145 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.0 event, but later upgraded it to 5.1.

Tremors last week

Eight quakes with a magnitude 5.5 or higher have been registered in the region in the past week. The strongest, a 7.8 magnitude quake, was recorded in the same region one day ago.
