FUTABA DISTRICT, Fukushima — According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.9 magnitude quake occurred close to Tomioka at midnight on Saturday.

The tremor, which shook the area at 15:21 UTC (00:21 local time), was centered approximately 48 km east-northeast of Tomioka. It occurred at a depth of 54 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 6.0 event, but later downgraded it to 5.9.
