Update: May 18 – 5.2 magnitude earthquake registered close to Atka, AK

ALEUTIANS WEST CENSUS AREA, AK — A 5.2 magnitude quake occurred close to Atka on Monday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor jolted at 9:37 p.m. (10:37 a.m. local time), with its epicenter approximately 107 miles east of Atka and a depth of 6 miles.

Two tremors nearby past week

In the past week, two tremors greater than magnitude 2.5 have been centered nearby. Both were detected in the same area with the stronger — a 3.7 magnitude earthquake — rattling on May 16. The other, measuring 3.5, shook on May 15.
