Update: Earthquake of 5.0 magnitude recorded near Kuril Islands on Jan. 14

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.0 magnitude quake jolted close to Kuril Islands Wednesday morning.

The tremor hit at 20:36 UTC (06:36 local time), with its epicenter located of Kuril Islands and a depth of 35 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.1 event, but later downgraded it to 5.0.

Another magnitude 4.6 tremor was detected nearby last week; it also rattled close to Kuril Islands five days earlier.
