Update: Earthquake hits region near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia on July 28 – 5.1 magnitude detected

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.1 magnitude quake jolted close to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Monday night.

A tremor struck the area at 11:45 UTC (22:45 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was located about 136 km east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and occurred at a depth of 10 km.

In the past week, the area has experienced five quakes of magnitude 5.5 or above. The strongest, a 6.0 magnitude quake, was recorded in the same region four days ago.
