Earthquake measuring 5.0 strikes area close to Shikotan, Russia on Dec. 21

A 5.0 magnitude quake was detected close to Shikotan Sunday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor jolted at 00:19 UTC (10:19 local time), with its epicenter situated roughly 119 km east-southeast of Shikotan and a depth of 10 km.

Tremors last week

Over the last week, there have been six tremors of magnitude 2.5 or above centered nearby. The strongest, a 5.2 magnitude quake, was registered in the same region four days earlier.
