Update: Seismic activity on July 4 – 5.0 magnitude earthquake near Ovalle, Chile reported

LIMARÍ PROVINCE, Coquimbo — A 5.0 magnitude quake occurred close to Ovalle on Saturday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor hit the area at 03:09 UTC (23:09 local time). It occurred at a depth of 52 km with the epicenter about 39 km south-southwest of Ovalle.

The agency has received 4 responses on its online form so far, from people indicating they felt weak shaking. Several residents reported experiencing the quake in and around the La Serena area according to the USGS DYFI report.
