A 5.5 magnitude quake was detected near Severo-Kuril’sk around midday Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor, which struck the area at 01:10 UTC (11:10 local time), was centered roughly 217 km south-southwest of Severo-Kuril’sk. It occurred at a depth of 60 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.6 event, but later downgraded it to 5.5.
