Update: 5.0 magnitude earthquake rattles near Finschhafen, Papua New Guinea on April 17

A 5.0 magnitude quake occurred near Finschhafen on Friday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor, which shook the area at 21:46 UTC (07:46 local time), was centered roughly 99 km northeast of Finschhafen. It occurred at a depth of 98 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.1 event, but later downgraded it to 5.0.
