On Friday at 4:57 p.m. an updated dust storm warning was issued by the National Weather Service in effect until 9 p.m. for El Paso County.
“At 4:56 p.m., an area of blowing dust was much of Dona Ana and Otero counties,” explains the NWS. “Dangerous life-threatening travel.”
Locations impacted by the warning include Fort Selden State Historic Site, Hatch, Radium Springs, Boles Acres, Mesilla, Dona Ana, Afton Generating Plant, Chaparral, San Miguel, Three Rivers, Lake Lucero, Talavera, Three Rivers Petroglyph Site, High Valley, Corralitos, Northrup Landing, East Mesa, Santa Teresa, Mesquite and Karr Canyon. This includes the following highways: Interstate 10 in New Mexico between mile markers 123 and 164. Interstate 10 in Texas between mile markers 1 and 7. Interstate 25 in New Mexico between mile markers 1 and 48. Highway 70 in New Mexico between mile markers 150 and 212. Highway 54 in New Mexico between mile markers 17 and 100.
The NWS states, “Dust storms lead to dangerous driving conditions with visibility reduced to near zero. If driving, avoid dust storms if possible. If caught in one, pull off the road, turn off your lights and keep your foot off the brake.”
