At 8:29 p.m. on Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued an updated dust storm warning in effect until 10 p.m. The warning is for Crane, Pecos, Reeves, Upton and Ward counties.

“At 8:28 p.m., a dust channel was near Fort Stockton, moving east at 30 mph,” states the NWS. “Dangerous life-threatening travel.”

Locations impacted by the warning include Toyah Lake, Imperial Reservoir, Rankin, Balmorhea, Upton County Airport, Bakersfield, Girvin, Toyahvale, Firestone Test Track, Fort Stockton, Iraan Municipal Airport, Iraan, Saragosa, McCamey, Fort Stockton-Pecos County Airport, Coyanosa, King Mountain, Verhalen, B F Goodrich Testing Track and Sheffield. This includes the following highways: Interstate 10 between mile markers 187 and 327. Interstate 20 between mile markers 0 and 6.

The NWS adds, “There is no safe place on a highway when a dust storm hits. Visibility can be lost immediately, making it difficult or impossible to slow down and avoid stopped vehicles. Delay travel, or safely exit the highway before the dust storm arrives.”
