Update: Dust storm warning active for West Texas Saturday night

An updated dust storm warning was issued by the National Weather Service on Saturday at 8:34 p.m. in effect until 10 p.m. The warning is for Brewster, Jeff Davis, Pecos, Presidio and Terrell counties.

“At 8:34 p.m., a wall of dust was along a line extending from 23 miles north of Marathon to 21 miles north of Terlingua to 27 miles south of Big Bend Ranch State Park, moving south at 45 mph,” according to the NWS. “This includes Interstate 10 between mile markers 240 and 292.”

Locations impacted by the warning include Terlingua Ranch Lodge, Santiago Peak, Elephant Mountain Wildlife Management Area, Panther Junction, Presidio Lely International Airport, Marfa, Barton Warnock Environmental Educational Center, Firestone Test Track, Fort Stockton, Terlingua, Shafter, Fort Stockton-Pecos County Airport, Adobes, Big Bend National Park, Chinati Mountains, Alpine, Alpine-Casparis Municipal Airport, Paisano Pass, Chisos Basin and Terlingua Ranch Airport.

“Dangerous life-threatening travel,” states the NWS. “There is no safe place on a highway when a dust storm hits. Visibility can be lost immediately, making it difficult or impossible to slow down and avoid stopped vehicles. Delay travel, or safely exit the highway before the dust storm arrives.”
