Update: 5.0 magnitude earthquake rattles close to Puerto Santa, Peru on Dec. 28

SANTA, Ancash — According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.0 magnitude quake occurred close to Puerto Santa Sunday afternoon.

The tremor shook the area at 23:19 UTC (18:19 local time). It occurred at a depth of 73 km with the epicenter located approximately 43 km west of Puerto Santa.

Weak shaking was observed in and around the Trujillo area, where several residents reported experiencing the tremor, according to the USGS DYFI report.

Last week, one more magnitude 6.2 quake was recorded in the region, with the event occurring near Puerto Santa too, prior to this quake.
