Published Oct 26, 2026

The National Weather Service issued a report at 5:36 p.m. on Sunday for fog until 7:30 p.m. for Yuma, Kit Carson and Cheyenne counties.

“A few areas of dense fog have developed in Kit Carson and Yuma County. At 517 pm MT / 617 pm CT, the Burlington Airport AWOS reported 1/4 visibility. We expect similar areas of dense fog around the Colorado and Kansas border. With rain showers expected to move into the area this evening, expect visibilities to change rapidly. These conditions may make travel difficult. Take extra caution when on the road if driving,” explains the NWS.

The NWS comments, “Monitor the weather situation closely and be alert for threatening weather conditions.”

Fog safety: Tips from the NWS for safe travels

If you must venture out in foggy conditions, keep these safety tips from the NWS in mind:

Moderate your speed:

• Slow down and allocate extra time for your trip to reach your destination safely.

Visibility priority:

• Ensure your vehicle is visible to others by using low-beam headlights, which automatically activate your taillights. Utilize fog lights if your vehicle is equipped with them.

Avoid high-beams:

• Refrain from using high-beam lights, as they create glare, making it more difficult for you to see what’s ahead of you on the road.

Keep your distance:

• Maintain a generous following distance to account for abrupt stops or shifting traffic patterns.

Stay in your lane:

• Use the road’s lane markings as a guide to staying in the correct lane.

Zero visibility protocol:

• In cases of near-zero visibility due to dense fog, initiate your hazard lights and locate a secure spot, such as a nearby business parking area, to pull over and come to a halt.

No parking options:

• If no parking area is available, pull your vehicle as far to the roadside as possible. Once stationary, turn off all lights except the hazard flashers, engage the emergency brake, and release the brake pedal to ensure your tail lights are not illuminated, reducing the risk of other drivers colliding with your stationary vehicle.

By adhering to these precautions from the NWS, you can navigate foggy conditions more safely, reducing the likelihood of accidents and ensuring your personal safety.
