Published Apr 18, 2025

On Friday at 4:08 p.m. the National Weather Service released a blowing dust warning in effect until 10 p.m. for Guadalupe Mountains Above 7000 Feet and Guadalupe and Delaware Mountains.

The NWS states to prepare for, “Widespread blowing dust.”

“Severely limited visibilities are expected. Travel will be dangerous and possibly life-threatening. A sudden gust of wind could drop visibility to near zero instantly. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles like campers, vans, and tractor trailers. Aviation interests may experience localized but extreme turbulence, or strong downward airflows if flying in the near the Guadalupe Mountains,” says the NWS. “Persons with respiratory problems should make preparations to stay indoors until the storm passes. Be ready for a sudden drop in visibility to near zero. If you encounter blowing dust or blowing sand on the roadway or see it approaching, pull off the road as far as possible and put your vehicle in park. Turn the lights all the way off and keep foot off the brake pedal. Remember, ‘Pull Aside, Stay Alive’. Winds will be particularly hazardous at higher elevations where the strongest winds are likely to occur. Be especially careful driving in these mountainous areas. People driving high-profile vehicles should strongly consider postponing travel in these areas until the winds subside. Use caution if flying low near the mountains as severe turbulence is possible. Use caution when driving as blowing dust may reduce visibility.”
