GISBORNE DISTRICT, Gisborne Region — A 5.0 magnitude quake hit close to Hicks Bay on Saturday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor struck the area at 08:12 UTC (20:12 local time). It occurred at a depth of 10 km with the epicenter roughly 251 km north of Hicks Bay.
