The National Weather Service issued a dust storm warning at 9:14 a.m. on Monday in effect until 10 a.m. for Alamosa and Saguache counties.

“At 9:13 a.m., a dust channel was 7 miles north of Hooper, or 25 miles north of Alamosa, moving northeast at 10 mph,” states the NWS. “Hwy 17 and Hooper appears to be the worst visibility, but have extended the range of the warning to the northeat.”

Locations impacted by the warning include Crestone, Moffat, Hooper and Great Sand Dunes.

“Dangerous life-threatening travel,” explains the NWS. “Dust storms lead to dangerous driving conditions with visibility reduced to near zero. If driving, avoid dust storms if possible. If caught in one, pull off the road, turn off your lights and keep your foot off the brake.”
