On Monday at 6:08 p.m. the National Weather Service released an updated dust advisory in effect until 8 p.m. for El Paso County.

“At 6:05 p.m., a plume of blowing dust extended from south of Deming, across southern Dona Ana County, and into El Paso. Satellite imagery indicates denser dust is about to move into West El Paso and Santa Teresa, and visibility will likely drop to around 1 mile as it spreads east,” according to the NWS. “This includes Interstate 10 in Texas between mile markers 1 and 39. Portions of New Mexico Highway 9 west of Santa Teresa will also be impacted.”

Locations impacted by the advisory include El Paso, Santa Teresa, Sunland Park, Horizon City, Anthony, Hueco Tanks, Canutillo, Vinton and Westway.

“Hazardous travel,” explains the NWS. “Blowing dust brings reduced visibility, leading to dangerous driving conditions. If driving, avoid blowing dust if possible. If caught in dense blowing dust, pull off the road, turn off your lights and keep your foot off the brake.”
