Seismic activity on Oct. 2: Earthquake close to Vilyuchinsk, Russia detected – magnitude 5.1

A 5.1 magnitude quake occurred near Vilyuchinsk on Friday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor, which shook the area at 20:27 UTC (07:27 local time), was centered roughly 199 km south-southeast of Vilyuchinsk. It occurred at a depth of 10 km.

Nearby region hit by two quakes over the week

In the past week, the area has experienced two tremors exceeding magnitude 2.5, both centered in the same region. The larger, a 5.8 magnitude event, was recorded prior to this quake, while the other, at magnitude 5.0, struck on Oct. 3.
