System name: Fay

The National Hurricane Center’s 10 a.m. Sunday update reported that the weather system gained sufficient intensity to be named Fay. The tropical depression progressed to a tropical storm with winds of 45 mph. The name gain was first included in the 4 a.m. update. Tropical Storm Fay is in the Atlantic Ocean, 430 miles southwest of the Azores. With maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, it is moving to the northeast at 3 mph.

“Afterwards a turn to the southwest is expected on Monday,” forecasters explained. “Additional strengthening is expected during the next day or so, and Fay could approach hurricane intensity tonight.” They also said “A gradual weakening trend is expected to begin on Monday.”
