Earthquake of magnitude 5.3 detected close to Cafayate, Argentina on Sept. 20

SAN CARLOS, Salta Province — A 5.3 magnitude quake shook near Cafayate on Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A tremor hit the area at 08:47 UTC (05:47 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was roughly 64 km west of Cafayate and occurred at a depth of 10 km.

Past week’s tremors

In the past week, there have been two quakes greater than magnitude 2.5 nearby. The largest, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake, was registered in the same region on Sep. 13, while a smaller 4.5 magnitude quake was felt near Cachí on Sep. 15.
