Update: Earthquake shakes region near Neiafu, Tonga on Sept. 8 – 5.3 magnitude registered

A 5.3 magnitude quake hit close to Neiafu on Tuesday around midnight, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor, which jolted the area at 11:51 UTC (00:51 local time), was centered roughly 26 km northwest of Neiafu. It occurred at a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.2 event, but later upgraded it to 5.3.
