ALEUTIANS WEST CENSUS AREA, AK — A 5.2 magnitude quake shook near Nikolski on Tuesday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS reported a tremor in the region at 6:44 a.m. (7:44 p.m. local time). The epicenter was about 52 miles south-southwest of Nikolski, at a depth of 29 miles. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.1 event, but later upgraded it to 5.2.

Several residents reported feeling the quake in and around the Nikolski area according to the USGS DYFI report.

Closeby area rattled by two tremors over the week

In the past week, there have been two quakes above magnitude 2.5 centered in the region. Both were detected in the same area where the larger one was a 2.9 earthquake that occurred on Aug. 28. The other, of magnitude 2.5, struck on Aug. 25.
