Update: Earthquake of 5.0 magnitude reported close to Lorengau, Papua New Guinea on Aug. 20

A 5.0 magnitude quake occurred near Lorengau on Thursday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A tremor hit the area at 13:55 UTC (23:55 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was roughly 172 km northeast of Lorengau and occurred at a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.
