Update: 5.2 magnitude earthquake jolts near Hihifo, Tonga on Aug. 25

NIUATOPUTAPU, Niuas — A 5.2 magnitude quake occurred near Hihifo on Tuesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor struck at 15:15 UTC (04:15 local time), with its epicenter approximately 243 km southeast of Hihifo and a depth of 10 km. The magnitude was originally reported as 5.3 but later downgraded to 5.2.

A magnitude 4.9 tremor was registered in the region, with the event occurring close to Neiafu on Aug. 23.
