MATANUSKA-SUSITNA BOROUGH, AK — A 5.6 magnitude quake shook near Skwentna on Saturday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS reported a tremor in the area at 4:50 a.m. (8:50 p.m. local time). The epicenter was approximately 35 miles west-northwest of Skwentna, at a depth of 6 miles. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.5 event, but later upgraded it to 5.6.

The agency has received 1007 responses on its online form so far, from people reporting they experienced weak to light shaking. Residents reported feeling the quake in multiple cities, including Fairbanks, Healy and Cooper Landing according to the USGS DYFI report.

Closeby area rattled by two earthquakes over the week

In the past week, the region has experienced two tremors exceeding magnitude 2.5, both centered in the same area. The larger, a 3.1 magnitude event, was registered on Aug. 6, while the other, at magnitude 3.0, struck on Aug. 1.
