Update: Seismic activity on May 27 – 5.1 magnitude earthquake close to Calama, Chile detected

EL LOA, Antofagasta — A 5.1 magnitude quake hit close to Calama on Wednesday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor struck the area at 05:23 UTC (01:23 local time). It occurred at a depth of 104 km with the epicenter roughly 30 km northeast of Calama.

Tremors last week

Over the last week, the region has experienced 10 tremors with a magnitude 2.5 or above. The most significant was a 6.9 magnitude earthquake recorded in the same region on May 25.
