Update: Earthquake rattles region near Bitung, Indonesia on May 27 – 5.0 magnitude detected

A 5.0 magnitude quake occurred close to Bitung on Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor hit the area at 06:24 UTC (15:24 local time). It occurred at a depth of 23 km with the epicenter about 133 km southeast of Bitung. The magnitude was originally reported as 5.1 but later downgraded to 5.0.

Tremors past week

Last week, the area has experienced three tremors of magnitude 2.5 or above. The largest, measuring 5.9, shook in the same region on May 22.
