Update: Earthquake measuring 5.0 strikes area close to Kuril Islands on March 17

A 5.0 magnitude quake jolted near Kuril Islands on Tuesday around midnight, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor shook the region at 14:32 UTC (00:32 local time). It occurred at a depth of 51 km with the epicenter of Kuril Islands.

Two quakes closeby last week

In the past week, there have been two earthquakes exceeding magnitude 2.5 centered in the same area. The largest, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake, rattled on Mar. 15, while the other, measuring 4.3, occurred on Mar. 15.
