NIUATOPUTAPU, Niuas — the U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.0 magnitude quake occurred close to Hihifo on Friday around midday.
The tremor struck at 00:41 UTC (12:41 local time), with its epicenter situated roughly 82 km northeast of Hihifo and a depth of 35 km.

Nearby region rattled by two quakes over the week
During the past week, there have been two tremors exceeding magnitude 2.5 centered in the same area. The largest, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake, shook three days earlier, while the other, measuring 4.9, occurred on February 9.
