Update: Seismic activity on Dec. 23 – 5.0 magnitude earthquake close to South Sandwich Islands region registered

A 5.0 magnitude quake was detected close to South Sandwich Islands region Tuesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor rattled the area at 12:16 UTC (10:16 local time). It occurred at a depth of 10 km with the epicenter located of South Sandwich Islands region. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.
