AKKESHI DISTRICT, Hokkaido — A 5.5 magnitude quake was recorded close to Akkeshi Wednesday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor, which hit the area at 22:13 UTC (08:13 local time), was centered roughly 63 km east-southeast of Akkeshi. It occurred at a depth of 30 km. The magnitude was originally reported as 5.6 but later downgraded to 5.5.
