Update: Earthquake strikes region near Shikotan, Russia on Dec. 21 – 5.1 magnitude recorded

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.1 magnitude quake shook near Shikotan at midday on Sunday.

The tremor, which jolted the area at 02:05 UTC (12:05 local time), was centered approximately 83 km east-southeast of Shikotan. It occurred at a depth of 35 km.

In the past week, there have been eight tremors of magnitude 2.5 or above centered nearby. The strongest, a 5.2 magnitude quake, was reported in the same region four days ago.
